About Me
Hi everyone! Welcome to my English 1201 ePortfolio page where you'll get to know a little about me and my writing pieces over the course of the semester here at Sinclair!
My name is Kimberly Messer (the redhead to your right) and I am a senior in high school but I participate in a program called PSEO (Post Secondary Education Option) where I can attend college while still in high school. I am a full time student here at Sinclair and also participate in my high school extracurricular activities throughout the year. Through my high school career I've participated in quiz team, marching band and theater but being a senior this year is a huge wake up call! Whenever your performance or competition is over for the last time in any activity, it's like reading the ending of your favorite book, you never want it to end! You realize that you're slowly growing up and the people who you have been raised with, who made you who you are today, are slowly starting their own lives as well. However, I'm excited to move on in the next story of my life.
I grew up in a small town called Waynesville where I often tell people is located between a lake and a cornfield because that's really all Waynesville consists of. I live with my parents and grew up with four older siblings who you can see in the photo to your right. That's right! Three sisters and one brother! Being raised in a small town and a large family can definitely be a hassle at some point in life, but these people have shaped me into who I am today and I couldn't be more thankful for each and everyone of them. As each of us gets older, families are formed, dreams get bigger, and journeys begin. Mine is just beginning as i graduate from high school and move down to Cleveland, Tennessee for college at Lee University this upcoming summer. I plan to double major in early childhood education and psychology to potentially become a child therapist because I know I had some rough times growing up, and all I needed was someone to talk to. I want to be that outlet for kids.
I decided to get a head start on my college career by attending Sinclair and this online English class has definitely been a new experience for me in a positive way. I took this online class because the class I actually registered for was cancelled but this class has showed me a different and effective way of learning. In our online class, I participated in peer reviews, draft and final draft projects, and discussion forums where I believe I contributed positive and informational feedback to my fellow peers. I think I could have done better on pacing myself with each assignment such as time management because I often found myself racing to get things finished due to my busy schedule. When it comes to my grade, I think from the feedback from my fellow classmates and professor shows that my grade outcome could be very good, as my guest on my page, I would like you to decide for yourself. On the tabs to your left, you see several writing assignments that I have done throughout the course and each one has developed new strengths for me and has helped me identify my weaknesses as a writer. However, the hardest part about each of them was just getting a basic idea on how to start. When I write I paper, my mind goes in a hundred different directions until I finally found my topic and the direction I was going to take it.
The first assignment you'll see is a summary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "The Quest for Peace and Justice". In this paper, we were to read MLK's speech that consisted of several pages and write a summary of it that could not exceed two pages. I felt my thesis statement and main ideas along with my organization were my strongest points, but my conclusion was my biggest weakness because I made it a conclusion of the article where as you do not conclude the article in a summary. A simple mistake that was easily overlooked.
The second assignment available to you is a visual analysis paper where we were allowed to chose our own visual art and of course analyze it. I felt this was my strongest piece not only because I received a good grade on it, but because analyzing is my favorite thing to do when it comes to assignments. I felt my main ideas and support flowed very well, along with good transitions and organization. However, when I first wrote my first draft, I tended to over analyze everything to where it didn't make sense at some points. That's where my peer reviews really helped me. Just a word of advice, always get another point of view on your paper because it can change your perspective and enhance your paper in a positive way. I believe the peer revising is what best benefited me throughout this whole semester.
My last paper that is available to you, is my research paper. I'll tel you know, I struggled a lot with this paper only because I get research paper and persuasive essay mixed up very easily for some reason. My research was based on the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and how it negatively affected the U.S and its citizens overall and what I found greatly surprised me. I will say though, I believe my research is my strongest point along with citing the information and even if it isn't the best, I am still growing as a writer and understand that you can stumble sometimes but it only make you better.
Thank you for taking the time to view my page and I hope you got to know me a little better as a person and who I am as a writer. Feel free to view my writing assignments that are available on the tabs to your left.
